Slot Machine Revenue May Be Used Elsewhere

The Seneca Niagara Casino’s slot machine revenue goes several places, and one of them is the state – who has set aside a portion of their part, roughly $3.6 million, for the Niagara Falls Urban Renewal Agency. The years 2004 and 2005 saw a nice sum of the slot macine revenue go into this fund and the money was to be used for “economic development to facilitate private investment, private sector job creation and expansion of the tax base within the city.”

The slot machine revenue was thought to be used to build housing and other things downtown. However, city leaders are now thinking that they have somewhere else that the slot machine revenue might be better used. They are transferring half a million of that money to help the city itself. They are going to rebuild streets, tear down old and dilapidated buildings and fix the sidewalks.

The Mayor says that the slot machine revenue is really doing the same thing it was supposed to, because the hope for it was originally to help the city – and these are repairs and changes that the city desperately needs. The mayor says that the slot machine revenue is clearly spelled out in state law as to what it can be used for, and these improvements fall under that heading.

The agency had already transferred $605,000 of the slot machine revenue to the city’s banking arm to fund economic development loans for small businesses that wanted to come into the city. Councilman Christopher Robins says that the transfer left plenty of money in the account for future economic development.
