Tribe Will Have To Wait for Slot MachinesIn what can only be seen as true government in action, the Maine legislature decided to carry over a bill that would allow the Penobscot Indians to have 400 slot machines in addition to the bingo games that they already have. The tribe has been trying to get slot machines even before voters allowed slot machines to come into Bangor. However, they have not been successful so far. The tribe had gotten all but the final approval on the slot machines, but knew that the governor was planning on vetoing the bill. They said that since they knew the governor would veto the slot machine bill they decided to hold it over to the January session next year. Rep. Donna Loring of the Penobscot Nation said that they thought it would be best to hold off on it so that it did not get vetoed. The bill had received a lot of support, but not enough of a margin in the voting to override a veto in the Senate. They said they just didn’t have the votes to compete with the governor, and are hoping that come January things might look a little better for them. For his part the governor said that his opposition to slot machine expansion had remained constant. He said that he had opposed their trying to get a racetrack casino last year, and would continue to oppose them in getting slot machines. The tribe had collected the necessary signatures to get the measure on the November ballot.
