Why are Slot Machines So Addictive?

Slot machines are the number one addictive gambling game. More gambling addicts are slot machine players, more than anything else. Some researchers in Ontario want to know why that is, and decided to take the game apart.

What they discovered was actually surprising – the addiction may come from the slot machine, not the behavior of the player. Slot machines have been around for years, but in 1984 the way the slot machine truly operated changed. A Nevada inventor, Inge Telnaes changed the slot machine to give the appearance of a bigger payout than it really gives.

He had invented a slot machine that made gamblers think they had a good chance of winning, when really they didn’t. With a microchip inserted in each slot machine and determining the winner, he changed the game play so it was no longer related to the reels.

Outcomes are still random, but now they would stop more on the blanks on the payline than with winning symbols. The game you see, and the game you play, are actually two different things. By making players think that they had a chance of winning, they started putting more money into them because they thought they stood a real chance of hitting a jackpot when in all actuality, they stood less of a chance than before.
