Economy Reason For and AgainstThe economy is the reason for many things these days – it has become the number one reason to be quoted for why something is or should be. But what do you do when the reason for something is the economy – and the reason against something is the same thing? That is exactly what has happened in the Maryland slot machine debate. Both sides of the coin are hollering that the economy is their reason for doing what they are doing – but they are on opposite sides. Sure enough, those for slot machines, the For Maryland For Our Future group – is claiming that because of the economy they need slot machines more than ever. The faltering economy is responsible for state budget shortfalls which lead to higher taxes, etc. Without the slot machines, these things will have to come to pass. However, the group against the slot machines, Marylanders United to Stop Slots, says that the weak economy is the reason why slot machines should not be legalized. They say that there are too many people out there with less of their discretionary income, and that many casinos across the nation have been hurt by this loss of revenue. They say
that the estimates that the state has been touting are
overestimated and that there is no way that they will bring in
the millions that they say they will. So with both sides
claiming the same cause for different reasons – who is right?
Guess it is up to voters to decide.
