Maryland Slot Machine Opponents Change TacticsBoth Marylanders United to Stop Slots and Stop Slots Maryland have agreed to not take any money from those that support slot machines. It would seem that a pro slots group was offered financial support from a casino company and they are asking that the group not take money from casino interests. The two groups are trying to shoot down a slot machine referendum that would allow up to 15,000 slot machines to come into Maryland, and the bill goes up for a vote in November. As neighboring states such as Delaware, Pennsylvania and West Virginia already have slot machines; there is a good chance that they will support their cause as they don’t want to see more competition. But the other group is choosing to accept funding from pro slot machine interests such as Magna Entertainment Group, as they say that it really is in their best interests to align with these groups to get the slot machines legalized. In fact, the group headed by Frederick Puddester, who was appointed by Governor Martin O’Malley to promote the slot machines, has been handing out t-shirts and brochures paid for by gambling interests. Aaron Meisner of Stop Slots Maryland says that the gambling interests do not seem to be opposed to slot machines in Maryland as they could expand into the state, which would obviously be of benefit to them. He says no pro slot machine groups have reached out to him, but he would turn down the money if they did.
