Ohio
State
has Budget
It has
been a long haul for the legislators of
Ohio, but they have finally reached a
verdict on their budget, and both the House and the Senate has
agreed to the same balanced budget. This is a relief for many
people who were afraid that if they could not come to an
agreement they might find themselves out of jobs.
However,
there are those within the state that would rather that the
budget had not been passed for within it is the slot machines
that the state has voted so many times against. Within the
budget is a deal that says that Governor Ted Strickland is to
issue an executive order authorizing the slot machines at the
race tracks.
Strickland wanted the slot machines brought in, but did not want
to issue an executive order to get them. The House and the
Senate refused to bring in the slot machines without one. The
Republicans had been very clear on the fact that they did not
want to bring in slot machines without a vote from the people of
the state and therefore Strickland was forced to order the slot
machines legal.
The plan
will bring in thousands of slot machines at the tracks, which
will bring in roughly $933 million over the next two years. This
will enable them to keep many programs that would have been
closed down without the available funds. It is a tough call, and
many in the state will probably hold the slot machines against
Strickland when it comes election time, but those that won’t?
The workers at the shelters who will now have the money to feed
the homeless.
