Senate
President David Williams had his hands full Wednesday during a Evans
argued that without allowing slot machines to come in that the
state was allowing the tracks to die. He said that there were so
many other tracks that had been allowed in neighboring states to
have slot machines that they were putting theirs out of
business. He said that they had real possibilities for the state
to come back better than ever, but that slot machines needed to
be legalized for that to happen. He said
that Williams and his supporters were bound and determined to
let the racing industry in the state die off rather than give
them slot machines. Williams said that there was a bill that
needed to be passed that could resuscitate the tracks and save
the hundreds of thousands of jobs that are related to the racing
community, and all they had to do was legalize slot machines. Williams argued with Evans’ interpretation of the events, saying that his comments were “false and misleading.” He said that it was under his leadership that they got the extra money that was coming toward the racing industry. Others in the meeting said that they did not agree with Williams’ accounting of the details and that they wanted slot machines to help the industry as well.
