State Too Generous Thus Far?
The
state of Ever
since the tracks were able to bring in slot machines millions of
dollars have come flooding in, and the horse racing industry is
truly fat with profit. However, the state is looking at a
significant budget shortfall, and with programs like education
and Head Start soon to be on the chopping block a lot of people
also think that they need to give up some of that profit.
These
local politicians say that instead of the horse racing industry
getting as much of the profits as they have, they have to give
the state $100 million. This money would go for the various
programs that are going to be cut without the influx of money.
Instead of sending slot machine money to the tracks, they could
keep some of it back – thus ensuring these programs can continue
to operate.
Needless
to say the horse racing industry is very upset by the plan. They
say that it would be “devastating” to the industry, and that it
would hurt them immensely. They say that with the slot machines
they are finally the best in the industry, and to take away the
slot machine revenue would put them back on the bottom. They say
that horse racing in the state would never be the same, and that
they would not be able to recover from such a loss.
