Ohio
Could See Thousands of Slot Machines
Ohio
is looking to bring in slot machines to make up for a large
budget short fall that they are experiencing. However, the
biggest problem is that although the governor and the
legislature may have a desire to bring in slot machines, their
residents have voted them down every time that they have come up
for a vote. So now they are trying to figure out a way to bring
in the slot machines without asking permission – something that
has a lot of residents pretty angry.
Governor
Ted Strickland has a plan to bring in up to 15,250 slot machines
to the state – into the state’s seven racetracks. Most of the
games would be up and running by next May, ensuring millions of
dollars for the state – and thus ensuring the continuation of
many programs that may have to be cut otherwise.
The
state would get 48% of the revenue from the slot machines. This
would let them bring in approximately one billion dollars over
the course of 14 months. This is nothing to sneeze at – and both
sides have an opinion. Those that are for the slot machines say
that there is no way that the state can continue if they don’t
bring in the slot machines and that important funding will come
from them. They say that there is a desire to play slot machines
among residents, and they might as well benefit from them.
However,
those against the slot machines say that they have been very
clear as well – and that they don’t want them, nor do the
majority of residents. They argue that the economy is bad
enough, but to bring in slot machines would take money from
those least able to afford to lose it.
