Oil Spill Affects Beaches, Not Casinos

Interestingly enough, for those that have been worried about the tourism industry in Mississippi due to the oil spill; they need not have worried too much. Although those businesses along the coast that normally benefit from those that visit the beaches have indeed been hurt by the process, the state itself has seen a large increase in the amount of money that has been gambled at their slot machines. The state says that their slot machine revenues have gone from $87.3 million in June, which is up 3.7% over same time last year when they brought in $84.2 million.

This is the first positive month that the slot machines have seen since March of 2008 and they are understandably thrilled. However, experts warn that one positive month does not make a trend – and that they still need to keep their eye on the ball. According to Keith Crosby, GM of the Palace Casino in Biloxi – they are only looking at part of the picture. Yes, they have brought in more money from their slot machine revenues, but they have also spent a lot of money to get those people in. So although they are increasing slot machine revenues, they are also increasing the amount of money that they have as operating costs to try and increase that foot traffic.

He said that Mississippi does not have it as bad as Alabama as they have seen an even more drastic reduction in both people and slot machine revenue, but they are still fighting for every dollar that they get.
