Winners Come from Out of State

When you look at the list of winners from the Kiowa Casino in Oklahoma, the majority of the people there are from Texas. It is illegal to own or play slot machines in the state of Texas, but it is not illegal to cross state lines and play them there instead. So if Texans want to play slot machines they simply hop in their car and go across state line. Or they can simply wait for the bus to come to them, as many of the casinos in these neighboring states offer them a ride for them to come and leave their money at the door.

Horse and dog track gambling are legal in the state, but not slot machines. But the horse and dog tracks would like to see this changed. They say that this is a billion dollar industry and that the state of Texas is literally just letting that money cross state lines where the other states are getting the benefit of it. They say that not only are they hurting themselves by not keeping that money in state, they are also hurting their industries as they cannot afford to compete with neighboring tracks who are able to offer slot machines while they cannot.

Slot machine advocates are trying to change state law to make the slot machines legal, and they think that because of the shortfall of $18 million in the state budget that they stand a pretty good chance this year of getting it to happen. They think that if slot machines are ever going to get legalized that this is the year that it would be possible because of the worries about the budget.
