McGregor Loses AppealBirmingham Race Track owner Milton McGregor has lost his appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court over his slot machines. The state of Alabama had seized his machines claiming that they were slot machines and were illegal under Alabama law. McGregor had appealed the decision and lost, and was now attempting to get the federal courts involved. McGregor had argued that his machines were sweepstakes machines, and were not illegal because they were not slot machines. Furthermore, he argued that they were essential to his keeping his track open because he needed the revenue to compete. He said that he would have to lay off hundreds of employees if the games were considered slot machines, and that was bad for not just him but also for his employees and for the community. However, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to review the case and left it in the care of the Alabama Supreme Court. The Alabama Supreme Court is the one that said that the electronic sweepstakes games were simply slot machines in the first place, which is why McGregor was appealing. He said that several of the justices had campaigned against gambling and were therefore biased against the slot machines and should not have been allowed to rule on them. Obviously the feds saw it differently.
