Baldacci Vows to Veto

Both the House and the Senate have approved a bill that will allow the Penobscot Nation to operate slot machines, but the governor has said that he will veto the bill. It will let the tribe operate 400 slot machines, but the governor says no.

Many in the state were not looking to expand gambling past what is already allowed, but legislators say that if the state allows slot machines in Bangor at the casino there, they can’t dismiss the need for the tribe to have them as well. The tribe has maintained for some time now that the slot machines in Bangor have taken away a lot of their bingo business, and that they are losing revenue from the casino.

Legislators say that although they do not necessarily want to see more slot machines in the state, they say it is only fair to allow the tribe to have them as well. They say that when you look at the bottom line, Bangor’s ability to have slot machines gives them an edge over the tribe that just isn’t fair. They currently have a monopoly on slot machines, and the tribe cannot compete.

The governor office has confirmed that he will be in fact vetoing the bill so that the tribe cannot have the slot machines. The Senate vote was 20-15 which does not give them the 2/3rds needed to override the veto – so the tribe will not be able to get slot machines.

Many say it is just a clear and blatant case of discrimination, and that the tribe should take it to the federal government, then perhaps they will be treated as equals and not the red-headed step children of the state.
