Trying for Racing Ban for 2008 Ballot

The Committee to Protect Dogs has started collecting petition signatures to try and get greyhound racing banned in Massachusetts. They say that the dogs are treated cruelly and they want the sport banned. They are attempting to get enough signatures to get a measure on the ballot for 2008 that would ban the sport.

A similar measure got on the ballot in 2000, and barely lost, so the new campaign thinks that the time might be right to try it again. They tried in 2006, but the state’s highest court ruled that the wording was invalid so they lost their chance. They have some financial backing behind them already from major animal rights organizations such as Animal Rescue League, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and the Council of Churches.

They say that they are trying to get the racing banned before the state decides to add slot machines to the tracks. With the Mashpee Wampanoag Indian tribe looking to add a casino in the state, they will be trying to get Class III slot machines. The state has already suggested that they should add the slot machines before the tribe does, and if they do, it will be much harder to get the sport banned.

The animal rights organizations say that the amount of money that would come in from the slot machines would enable the tracks to “fend off further opposition” to the sport, and thus they would be unable to get the sport made illegal. They know that the amount of revenue that the tracks would be looking at from the slot machines would be in the millions.
