PA Budget Could Halt Slot MachinesState legislators must approve the PA state budget before June 30th, or they are going to lose millions of dollars in slot machine revenue. The Rendell Administration says that they are going to have to lay off state workers if a deal has not been made. State employees of the non-essential nature would be laid off while the budget was worked out, but those non-essential employees are those that are responsible for the slot machines at the casinos. The slot machines are linked to the home computer in Harrisburg, and with no one to run and maintain the computer, the slot machines would have to shut down until the budget is signed. By mid-July they will be out of work, and the casinos and their slot machines will be closed. Since the time that the first casino in the state started running their slot machines last November, more than $4.6 billion has come through the casino doors. Meadows Racetrack took in $60.3 million in revenue by itself – of which $2.7 million went to the state and $2.2 million went to the casino after pay outs. The casinos say that they don’t want to shut down, that there is a lot of revenue being generated daily from the slot machines. However, they won’t have a choice. The Gaming Control Board says that they are optimistic that a solution will be reached, but for now they have many issues that they have to work out before a deal can be made.
