Will Casino Arcades be Legalized?Fort Myers City Council is trying to decide if they should lift the ban on casino style arcades, or if they should leave it in place. Right now the council seems pretty half and half, with some declining to say which way they lean, but many residents hope the ban gets lifted. Florida is pretty clear about what they allow and what they don’t. They allow arcades that are amusement centers for kids, and they allow greyhound racing, horse racing, jai alai, and card rooms as well. A state license is required to set one up, and they have to pay an annual fee for the county that they are located in. Some have stricter rules as far as the fees, some charge per machine, some a flat rate, but many of them allow the casino arcades to come in. Fort Myers is now trying to decide if they are going to allow the ban to lift – as they have had a moratorium on new arcades within the city limits for the past year. As long as the arcades involve skill and no more than $0.75 is redeemed per spin, as well as no cash, alcohol or tobacco prizes are allowed, then it is officially an arcade game and it is allowed. If any of those tenants are violated, then it is a slot machine, or a casino game and it is illegal. There are currently about 400 licensed arcades throughout Florida, and most counties allow them but some do not. They say that they are seedy and they don’t want that element in their county.
