Mashpee Wampanoags Celebrating

The Mashpee Wampanoags just got official federal recognition as a tribe and therefore have every reason to celebrate. However, they can also now open a casino on their tribal lands, which gives them even more to celebrate. They are planning on opening a casino by 2010, but what it can offer at that casino is open for discussion.

The tribe does not like where its current location would be, so they are looking to move its location. The state says that perhaps they should go into business together, and this way the state can make some money off of it, and the tribe can upgrade the type of slot machines that it can offer.

According to Massachusetts law, they can operate Class II slot machines, which are bingo, keno, that sort of thing. However, if the state gets involved, they might be able to start offering Class III Vegas type slot machines, which will change everything. The state says that even though Class III slot machines are not currently legal, they could fight for them and win like they did at Foxwoods in Connecticut.

They would then be bringing in millions of dollars in revenue above what they would have brought in with the Class II slot machines. However, some residents don’t care what they bring in for the state, they say that they don’t want those types of slot machines in their state. The state seems to be taking the stance that says that if you can’t beat ‘em, you might as well join ‘em.
