Tribes Get More Slot Machines, Longer HoursThe American Indian tribes of Washington State are sitting pretty today with their new slot machine compacts finally legalized. Governor Chris Gregoire had signed the slot machine compacts in March, but they just became part of the federal register last week. Almost all of the state’s tribes re-negotiated their compacts with the state, so that now they get more slot machines, in addition to other benefits that were approved. They wanted to be able to set their own hours, and they wanted customers to be able to put cash into the slot machines instead of tribal issued tickets, and both requests were approved. The state had requested 1/4th of 1% of tribal slot machine revenue to come back to the state to go to gambling and smoking programs, so the tribes will pay roughly $3.1 million each year to the state. Governor Chris Gregoire feels that it was a fair compact, even though she wanted to give the tribes fewer slot machines, and that did not get approved. The tribes wanted to have unlimited monetary limits on the slot machines, and that was not approved either. Each tribe was allowed to own a total of 675 slot machines, and now they will be able to own 975. The increase is substantial for the tribes, and overall will bring in millions more in slot machine revenue to the state.
