Comps on the Rise

A recent report from Atlantic City has shown that although slot machine revenue is down, comps are on the rise. With Pennsylvania having five slot machine casinos open now, it is no wonder that AC’s numbers are low, but what the casinos are doing it about it is.

A comp is a freebie that the casinos give away. It can be free hotel rooms, free food, rolls of quarters for the slot machines, basically any sort of perk that the casino gives you in return for playing at their casino. Some of the casinos have cut back on the number of comps that they are giving out in hopes of making up for lost revenue. However, many others are stepping it up a notch.

The report shows that comps are up by more than 2%, which may not seem like a lot but when you are talking about 2% of millions of dollars, it takes on a different meaning. Especially with the casinos being down by 5.5% in their revenue This is the fourth month this year that their revenues have not been what they were same time last year.

Four of the eleven casinos that have felt the drop in revenue have dropped their comps, but the other seven are handing them out faster than ever in an attempt to keep those customers that are here, here. Some of the patrons were happy that they were getting more freebies, but they didn’t know why – they just knew that they were getting them.

Overall, according to customers, Harrah’s Atlantic City seems to be the most generous with their comps. The Atlantic City Hilton seems to be giving out more cash back offers than in the past, when in all actuality the Hilton has actually cut back on its offers.
