One County Yes, One County NoIn what seems reminiscent of a vote on slot machines in Florida last year, one county voted yes for table games in West Virginia, and one county voted no. Jefferson County voters said no to the games, while Ohio County residents voted yes by more than 2 to 1. Kanawha County will not hold their vote until August 11th, but they say that the vote yes in Ohio County gives them hope. They say they relate more strongly with Ohio County than Jefferson County, they are more alike. They say that economically the two counties are much more similar. They say that the economy in Jefferson is doing so well, they don’t really need the table games; however, they have lost more than 50,000 jobs in their area and this might help to keep people in the state instead of looking for jobs elsewhere. Kanawha County Commissioner Kent Carper says that people complain that there is too much traffic already, and that the games will bring more – but he says that that traffic is people leaving the state. He says table games are a good way to keep them here. The West Virginia Council of Churches disagrees; they say that the table games will bring in more crime to the area, crime they cannot handle. Reverend Dennis Sparks, the groups Executive Director, compares them to Atlantic City. He says that they have “one of the worst crime rates in the country” and wants to know if residents want that here – because that is what they will get.
