Florida Slot Machines Not So MuchExperts around the state had predicted that the slot machines in Broward County in South Florida would be bringing in millions and millions of dollars for the state and its schools. However, it seems that this is not really the case – and the slot machines are not performing as well as expected. In fact, experts are now changing their tunes to say that they were in fact wrong about the amounts that the slot machines would bring in. The state had said that the slot machines at the three racetrack casinos, would bring $177.2 million to Florida’s public schools for the 2007-2008 fiscal year. They based it on each slot machine making about $219 a day. However, the schools have only gotten $44.4 million so far from the casinos, and only one of the casino’s slot machines are hitting that $219 a day goal. They say that with half of each dollar going to the schools, there really isn’t much coming their way. They say that they underestimated the power of the Seminole name and brand, as the tribe continues to dominate South Florida’s gambling market. They are not responsible for the state’s slot machine tax as well, which is helping them out tremendously. They say that they have such a brand name now, especially since they purchased the Hard Rock brand, that the racetracks are having a hard time competing.
