Table Games Gaining Popularity

The campaigns in West Virginia for and against the addition of table games to the existing slot machines at their tracks have become prolific in the days leading up to the June 9^th election in Jefferson County. Early voting has already begun and many have already voted.

By last Friday, more than 1,300 people had already cast their votes for or against the table games, with more than 200 voting on the first day alone. The County Clerk said that she was excited to see the number of people taking an interest in it, that it was good to see people voting on things that mattered to them.

Many think that the vote will end up with table games being legalized, because so much good would come out of the revenue from them. A percentage of the revenues would go directly to the Jefferson County School District for capital improvements, while other monies would go for senior citizen programs and horsemen’s benefits.

The Board of Education is pushing for the games as they know that the school will get somewhere around $1.5 million a year – which will let them build more classrooms, upgrade their existing facilities, get computer equipment, etc. The whole Board of Education, except for Gary Kable, have already voted and they are in support of the games. Kable was sick and has not yet voted, but they say he will when he is up to it.

There are many who are for the table games simply because they will bring in much needed jobs. The track says that they are planning on bringing in 75 tables next year, and if they do, they will need 500 more employees – which will be full time positions with benefits.
