The Other Side of GamblingPeople always think about gambling and gambling addiction pretty much in the same breath. But what about the loved ones of those who have a gambling problem? People don’t usually think about them. For the spouse of an addicted gambler, it can be a lot like being married to a drug addict, or having a partner that is unfaithful to you. You find patterns in all personalities that mesh with each other. Like an unfaithful husband, gambling is the other woman. Perhaps your spouse likes to spend more time with her, or is staying out late to play the slot machines while you go to bed alone. Perhaps it is the rush of the drug called gambling that drags them back again and again. Instead of spending all of their money on cocaine, it is slot machines and table games. They might rob, lie, cheat, steal, etc. to get the money to feed their habit, but you won’t know until it is too late. Many people think that addicts gamble for the money, but that is not true. There are traditionally only two reasons why people become gabling addicts – they are trying to escape their everyday life, or they are looking for some kind of stimulation that they are not currently getting otherwise. Gambling addiction programs say that they see both kinds calling for help and coming to meetings. They say that if they were in it for the money they would have left it a long time ago.
