Illinois Legislature Under FireMany in Illinois are speculating these days as to whether or not their legislature is serving the people or themselves. They say that they have shown themselves to be of questionable nature, and the comprehensive gaming bill is one more example of that. They say that two years ago the Gaming Board said that Penn National Gaming could not own all three of the casinos that they owned because one entity could not own three of the nine casinos in the state. They made them sell two of the casinos, and then about a week ago the Senate overruled the Board. Citizens say that it seems that the $500,000 that Penn National has paid into their coffers might have had something to do with that. They are also concerned that the legislature is looking to add slot machines to racetracks and want to know what one has to do with the other. They say that anybody can play a slot machine, but picking horses takes a real talent. They say that at least with horse racing there is some skill, some brain power at work, unlike slot machines where any idiot can stick a coin in a slot. They say that the state has already approved slot machines in casinos, why do they have to mess with a great American pastime like horse racing. They agree that the tracks are in trouble, but they don’t agree that slot machines are the solution to that trouble.
