Mississippi Still Recovering From KatrinaIt has been almost two years since Hurricane Katrina passed through and destroyed much of Pass Christian in Mississippi. Residents don’t have a grocery store yet, many are without homes, and small businesses are being operated out of trailers at best. However, life being what it is, the casinos are up and running. The casinos have come back and most are bigger and better than before. They are able to buy up land that the average person that used to live there can no longer afford. Plus, new laws have been passed that make it even easier for the casinos to be built and to prosper. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, the state legislature passed a law that allowed the casinos to now build on land. Before the hurricane, they were restricted to water based casinos only, but now they can come inland to protect them from future storms. Locals are upset that the casinos now have the right to come ashore, and that they are taking advantage of the opportunity. They say that the legislature passed it in a time of local distress and snuck in a new provision for them that locals would never have voted for. Casino officials and legislators say that the casinos were vital to helping rebuild the area and that if they hadn’t acted quickly they would have lost even more money in the already desperate area. The way they are restructuring the area it will soon be impossible for those that lived here to live here any longer.
