Lawmakers Want to See UIGEA Overturned

There are many lawmakers who think that the passing of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act was a mistake. They say that all the government has done is make criminals out of decent citizens who just want to blow off some steam playing slot machines or poker online. They say that the government is being shortsighted when it comes to what is so obviously a potential revenue source.

Two men have stood out from the rest, one is former New York Senator Al D’Amato, and the other is Rep. Barney Frank from Massachusetts. D’Amato has taken over the helm of the Poker Player’s Alliance, which is a group of about a half a million poker players who are trying to overturn the law. D’Amato says that they have made it into Prohibition all over again, and that they have made it possible for criminals to take over what was a decent industry.

Frank says that it is an issue of freedom for the individual. He has introduced a bill that will legalize online poker and gambling again, and regulate the industry. It entails a lot of work for the sites, as they would have to be responsible for those that are playing, such as underage gamblers and those with gambling addictions. However, he also says that this would get rid of a lot of the dishonest people you have running the gambling industry now.

If you legalize online slot machines and poker you could be looking at somewhere around $3.5 billion a year in tax revenue. It would also solve the problem of possible trade sanctions because of the problem with the WTO (they have ruled the UIGEA illegal, and ordered the US to remove the ban or ban all online horse race gambling within the country. We didn’t, and now we are facing possible sanctions.)

There are other legislators that are looking to repair the damage done by the bill as well; some are trying to pass legislation that would just legalize one part of it, like poker, or slot machines, etc. One thing is for sure, if they are successful in re-legalizing just one part of it, surely the rest will follow.
