Meadows Looking for AddictsThe Meadows Racetrack & Casino saw more than 50,000 slot machine players walk through their doors in their first week alone. Of those thousands of slot machine players, they are aware that there are easily a few thousand gabling addicts in with them. The casino puts out literature from Gamblers Anonymous as well as literature that shows them how to exclude themselves voluntarily from all the casinos in the state, but no one has opted to take that information yet. All of their employees have gotten training on how to identify and help someone who seems to be addicted to the slot machines, but they are aware that they will not be intervening all that often. The casino says that it is very difficult to identify someone who is addicted to gambling. They say that because it is so hard, they don’t know where the line is between someone there who wants to lose their money in a slot machine, and who there is desperate to win. They say they will keep an eye out for them, but they also don’t want to tread on anyone who is simply having a good time. The
casino says that the state, and the public, want to know that
the casino is taking steps to warn people about the dangers of
gambling, and that they are able to educate slot machine players
about addiction, but that there are no guarantees that anyone
will be stopped by doing so. Back to June Index - Slot Machines Fan |
