Miami Pari-Mutuels Seeking Slot MachinesSlot machines were the subject of much discussion before the vote that split Broward County and Miami-Dade County. Both counties voted on whether or not to allow slot machines at their pari-mutuel facilities, and only Broward voters approved the measure. Now those located in Miami-Dade County are trying again. Calder Race Course and Flagler Dog Track and Sports Entertainment Center are seeking slot machines at their facilities. They have initiated a formal request with the Governmental Operations and Environment Committee of the Miami-Dade County Commission, and are hoping to get a referendum on the ballot to allow them to bring in slot machines. The two facilities are seeking for the slot machines to be allowed at their locations, as well as a third in the county. They are hoping to get the slot machine initiative on the state presidential primary which will be held January 29, 2008. The commission is expected to vote on the request at their next meeting. Calder Race Course is owned by Churchill Downs Incorporated, and Flagler Dog Track is a privately held, family owned business.
