Norway Bans Charity Slot Machines

Gambling addiction has become so rampant in Norway that the Norwegian state has decided to declare a monopoly on all slot machines. They say that slot machines have simply exploded across their country, and therefore they find just cause in trying to get a handle on it. They say that they have to curb the social problems that the slot machines have been causing.

The ban for all charity organizations begins July 1^st – with organizations having until then to remove their slot machines form all of their bars, supermarkets, airports and gas stations, as well as any other locations that they might have them in. They say that all humanitarian organizations, sporting clubs and volunteer groups must abide by the new slot machine ban.

There were roughly 18,500 slot machines in Norway, and although the country recognizes that the slot machine ban will hurt the charities, they have to be realistic and take care of the more pressing need to limit the number of opportunities that gambling addicts have to play the slot machines.

There are currently more than 70,000 Norwegians addicted to slot machines, which make up about 1.5% of their total population. They say that of that percentage, more than 130,000 are considered to be dangerously addicted to the slot machines. The problem with banning them say charities is that the slot machines have become one of their main sources of income. The government is aware of that, but cannot put the needs of those that are addicted to the side so that the charities can make money.
