Prez on the Rez DisputesDemocratic presidential candidates may be drawing their line in the sand, and this may not be where they want to draw it. The “Prez on the Rez” tribal forum is an opportunity for Democratic presidential candidates to speak in front of thousands of tribal leaders from across the nation. So why aren’t they jumping at the chance? Because the labor unions, who have long been supporters of the Democratic Party, are up in arms about the additional slot machines and gambling that the tribes are looking to do in California. They say that the tribes are making it difficult for them to organize their casino employees. The tribes say that they have done nothing but support the unions, and that they have never discouraged anyone from joining them. However, they say that if the democratic hopefuls think that they can not show up and show their support of the tribes, then the tribes won’t be supporting them. Only two of the candidates have RSVP’d – Governor Bill Richardson and Senator Mike Gravel. The big three, Senator Barack Obama, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Senator John Edwards, have not said one way or the other. However, by not making a statement, they have already made one. The
tribes say that if they won’t even come to something like this,
then they won’t be able to count on them for anything once they
are actually in the White House, so they will be putting their
support, and their money, behind those that show up.
