Group Says No to Sedgwick CasinoLocal African American pastors are urging people to vote no on a proposed casino in Sedgwick County, as they say that African Americans and Hispanics are seven to eight times more likely to become addicted to gambling than white people are. They say that the proposed casino will bring them nothing but heartache and grief should it be allowed to open. Pastor Bryan Mann of New Beginnings Seventh Day Adventist Church said that “faith does not go with gambling” and he hopes that people will realize the true blight on their people that the casino would bring in. Pastor Margarita Carlson of Better Covenant Church said that the money that goes into the casino will come from those who cannot afford to give it. She said that the addicts are the ones who will be frequenting, and they don’t need that kind of trouble. The group is asking voters that if they were considering voting yes for the casino to please reconsider and think about what it will do to their community. They say that if it is approved, 2% of their slot machine and gambling revenue would be going to help gambling addicts – which they say voters should see that the government is already worried about addiction, or they would not have put that money aside.
