Stronach Pushes for Slot Machines

Governor Jennifer Granholm has been trying to decide if it is possible to legalize the new Horse Wizard slot machine type games at Michigan racetracks. The state needs the revenue, but the governor needs to be careful not to add something that critics are saying needs a statewide referendum to be legalized.

Granholm went and met with Frank Stronach, Chairman of Magna International, Inc. which is the maker of the slot machine type game. He said that his horse track, the Michigan Downs, needed the game to make the establishment “financially viable.” He also allegedly said that Hazel Park Track and Northville Downs also needed the revenue.

He is currently using the machines at five other sites, and they are performing well for him. He even brought them into Maryland, where slot machines are illegal, but there was not much of an interest there for them.

The other casinos are concerned that they are trying to bring in slot machines to the tracks, and they say that they want to take a look at the machines. They say that anything that violates Proposal One will not happen. Proposal One is an amendment that says basically the horse tracks cannot add slot machines without permission from the voters of the state.

There are also several other anti-slot machine and gambling groups that are opposed to any kind of gambling expansion, and they say that they will challenge any attempts by the governor to sign these machines into existence without the residents having their say.
