Gaming Commission Backs Off of Slot MachinesWith increasing pressure from the Indian tribes it looks as though the government is going to back off on turning bingo machines into slot machines. The National Indian Gaming Commission says that they are putting “aside the controversial proposals” for now, as they now see the problem that it could cause for many tribes. The commission had been looking to change the way many bingo games are classified, which would have made many machines that are currently classified as bingo games now classified as slot machines. This would have had a huge economic impact on those tribes that offer those machines. Any tribe that was located in a state that did not allow slot machines that now had a machine classified as one would have to remove the game from their gaming floor. Other states that allow only so many slot machines on the floor – and allow the casinos to fill the rest with bingo machines, would have required them to remove those extra games as well. The government has been trying to regulate the tribal gaming industry as it has been growing at what many find to be an alarming rate. However, by passing the new classifications they would have put many tribes’ economic status in jeopardy which is not their purpose.
