Officials Defend Contract
Maryland
Lottery officials have some explaining to do as far as the
residents of Criticism
is surrounding the deal because of the number of casinos that
have not opened yet. Many, including State Comptroller Peter
Franchot, say that they should not have signed a deal for that
many slot machines and for that amount of money with so many of
the casinos in the state still up in the air. Almost two years
to the day that the slot machines were first legalized by voters
the first casino is due to open, but that comes as a small
consolation to residents. State Lottery Director Stephen Martino defended his decision stating that they needed these top tier slot machines in order to compete with the states around them. They said that they are vying for the same dollars as those surrounding states and that if they do not offer them the best of the best that eventually those players that are coming there won’t come any more. They say that in no time at all are they going to have all of these casinos open and then they as a state will be a slot machine force to be reckoned with. But if they cut themselves off at this point, they will never be able to play catch up.
