Australia Sees Popularity Increase in Land Based Slot Machines

Australian legislators are spending a lot of time trying to stop online gambling in their country as they feel that it is a detriment to their residents. They have been receiving a lot of flack from other countries who say that by limiting the access to online gambling that their countrymen want that they will also have the ability to limit their access to pretty much anything they want. However, while they are spending all this time looking into their online gambling problems, they may have overlooked the ones that are happening right under their noses.

The slot machine industry has gotten a recent boost in Australia as their residents are now turning to land based slot machines in record droves. According to a recent report, those with a gambling addiction are turning to the slot machines that are right in front of them on land more than they are turning to those that are on the internet. According to activists, there are currently 300,000 problem gamblers in Australia right now, which is the equivalent of the entire population of their national capital.

The slot machines on land are generating roughly US $15 billion a year, and delegates have been told that they are facing a “social emergency” of very large proportions as 50% of the slot machine losses are coming from those with a gambling problem. They say that they have to find a way to limit access to these slot machines before they destroy them as a country.
