Alberta Told to Get LostAlberta’s gaming regulator was threatening to crack down on an online casino hosting that the Alexander First Nation is trying to set up. However, the Chief, Raymond Arcand, did not feel that it was any of their business, and politely told the regulator to get out of their way. The Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission maintain that it is their business, as it is against the Criminal Code for the tribe to set up gambling through the Alexander Gaming Commission. Arcand says they have not done anything illegal and that he will be checking with his lawyers to see if the government has a say in it. The AGLC says that they would be taking legal action against anyone who tried to do this, not just the tribe. They say that the law states that they must have permission from the government and have licensing that they do not currently have. The tribe says that they are protected under the Indian Act, that they can make their own rules as it pertains to their land. The government however, sides with Alberta saying that they have to get permission from Alberta. The tribe says that they are not ready to host online gambling yet, but they are taking bids from other companies to assist them in it. They say that casinos would have to pay them $45,000 in start up fees as well as $40,000 in annual fees.
