Bishop Urges Catholics to Stop Gambling

Bishop Luc Bouchard of St. Paul has written a pastoral letter to the churches, schools, and parishioners of his diocese – urging them to be better Catholics and resisting the temptation of raising money for their needs by using gambling to do so. He has told them that they have three years to find another method of raising money, as gambling would no longer be an option for them.

He wants them to speak with their government officials telling them how much they need to eliminate and regulate it as well, as he feels that the gambling industry has gotten out of control in Alberta – as have many of the other Bishops. In 1998, the group sent out a statement entitled “The False Eden of Gambling” in which they urged their governments to use something other than gambling to raise money, and instead focus on other methods of doing so.

Bishop Fred Henry has regularly spoken out against gambling in the nine years that he has been in Calgary, and convinced the Calgary Catholic School District to end all casinos in the school councils. He said that gambling needs to be restricted to games of chance and skill that are truly just innocent fun – nothing that could be construed as actual gambling.

Bishop Bouchard says that somewhere around $1.3 billion a year is brought in just through the province in gambling, and that because it has become such an integral part of their community no one even notices the danger that it is doing. He says it used to be considered disreputable, and now it is commonplace.
