Colonial Downs Looking at Slot Machines?

Colonial Downs is looking to bring in video horse racing machines that many say are simply a version of slot machines. The track has already gotten the measure passed through the Senate, and now it is off to the House to see if it will pass there. If it is approved, the track would bring in 11,000 slot machines at its Richmond track and their nine off track betting locations throughout the state of Virginia.

The games are called historical racing, and they would hold more than 10,000 horse races that people would then be able to bet on. If their horse wins, they get a payout. It seems like it would be easy to win if you know your horses, but the identities of the race, track and horses are withheld until after the customer places their bet – so it makes it very hard to win.

The National Council of Problem Gambling is concerned because of the addictive element of the games. They say that it would be possible to sit in front of the slot machine for hours upon end, losing more money than you can imagine. The track however, says that the games are the answer to the transportation issue that the state is currently facing, saying that if approved – they would be giving the state half of the estimated $600 million that the games are likely to bring in.

The governor doesn’t think that the games will bring in that much money, but he said he is willing to study the issue and vote accordingly. He said that he thinks that the games are similar enough to the horse racing that the state already allows, so he does not know why it would be an issue to add the video games to the state.
