Some Concern Over Slot Machines

There are many slot machines in the state which leads many to think that if there were less, there might be less gambling addiction. There are recreation clubs a plenty, and if they remove the slot machines from each of the clubs, they think that would have a big impact on the addiction problem that they are facing.

Chief Minister Datuk Musa Aman said that the state would be looking at other ways of reducing the number of slot machines as well, for the public is very concerned over the number of slot machines that the state has – there are currently 445 slot machines in operation. Musa said that there would be a freeze on adding any more slot machines to the state, that no more would be allowed in until further notice.

This is not the first time that concerns over the number of slot machines that are in the state have come up, but this time it seems like something is actually getting done about it. The Local Government and Housing Ministry recently proposed a Gaming Tax on each slot machine per month of RM3,000 be paid by all owners.

If the tax is levied, the state could be looking at RM16 million a year from such a tax. However, the public is putting pressure on Musa to remove the slot machines, either altogether or at least a larger portion of them, to try and combat the problem that they are having with gambling addition.

The concerns with the tax are that the gaming operators might change the slot machines so that they don’t pay out as well to make up for the money they are losing paying out the tax. They said that it will not change the number of people gambling at all. They say it is more important to educate the public on the consequences of gambling, and try to at least curb the amount of it that is going on.
