French Lick Against Slot Machines at Tracks

A bill is currently sitting in the Indiana House to approve slot machines at the state’s racetracks, and many Legislators are concerned that it made it there in the first place. However, the bill (HB 1835) passed 9-3 from the Ways and Means Committee and is now on its way to the House for a full vote.

Those that voted for the bill say that it was the honorable thing to do, and that this has been going on for years. They said that the state wanted dockside and they got it in 2002; then they wanted a casino in Orange County and they got that in 2003; and the last request was slot machines at racetracks, and it was their turn. They had supported the other measures, and now they expected to be helped out just as they had helped everyone else out.

They also point out that the Anderson track had the rights to the French Lick Casino, but they backed off and let someone else take it so that they could get their casino – with the understanding that they would then get slot machines at their track. Now, they are trying to keep the racetracks from getting slot machines, and that is just unfair and underhanded.

Those nine that voted for the bill say that the bill should pass the House, for that would be the right thing to do. However, the casino and the areas are putting a lot of pressure on their legislators and they are afraid that they will cave under the pressure and not give the tracks their slot machines, even though they are rightly due them.
