Maryland Considering Riverboat Slot Machines

This is not the first time that Maryland has considered legalizing slot machines on riverboats, but it is definitely the longest a bill has lasted in the state. Many states already allow riverboat gambling, such as Indiana who brought in $803 million last year in slot machine and amusement game revenue. The new bill, the Maryland Vessel Gambling Act would be the first to pass if it does.

It would allow for riverboats holding at least 400 passengers to dock at approved sites along the riverfront to pick up and discharge passengers who are playing the slot machines. Senator Norman Stone is one of the supporters of the bill, and he says that he does not necessarily think it will pass. However, he sponsored the bill because he wants to keep the slot machine debate alive in the state.

Stone says that the state already allows gambling, so to legalize slot machines is not out of left field. He says it is “hypocritical” of the state to allow other forms of gambling and not the slot machines at the racetracks. He said the horse industry is dying and the least they can do is give them slot machines to try and keep the jobs that would be lost without the tracks.

Katherine Klausmeier is also supporting the bill as she says that the bill is a compromise between those that want the slot machines and those that don’t want them in their backyard. She says that this way those that wanted to play the slot machines could go down to the riverfront to grab a boat, and those that don’t want to see them never have to.
