Mohawks Finally Getting Casino

The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe of the Catskills has been trying for thirty years to get a casino up and running, but they have never been able to get the state to agree to a compact with them. Both parties have valiantly tried to come to some sort of agreement, but it was to no avail. However, that has all changed with Governor Eliot Spitzer giving the go ahead to the casino after such a long wait.

There were things on both sides of the deal that each wanted, and they were able to come to a compromise that made everyone happy. Now they have to send the compact up to the U.S. Department of Interior, where they will have the final say as to whether or not the compact will be approved. Within this department is the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and they will have a say as well as to if they approve of the slot machine compact or not.

As Spitzer is a Democrat he says he is not sure how the Republican Bush administration will feel about the compact. They can only hope that they do what is in the best interest for the tribe and the state, instead of worrying about party lines. Spitzer is intending to go to Washington to stress how important this deal is for the state, and the area that it would be built.

The casino would bring in revenue and 3,000 jobs to the economically challenged area, as well as give money to the state. He said he is not concerned with any traffic problems as the roads that are already in place work just fine and they are barely used. He also said that they will make sure that gambling addiction education and treatment programs are in place for the area as well.
