Report Stirs ControversyA new report that calls for radical changes in the Nevada gambling industry has created quite a stir. So much in fact, that many of the original writers of the document are backing away from it saying that they have basically changed their minds about what the report states. The seven page document was written by a panel of 22 people, headed by Las Vegas Sands Corp President Bill Weidner. Weidner hosted the group, and he said that the report was based on his notes from their meetings and contained suggestions that they wanted to look into. He said that one of their goals was to increase revenues, as well as increasing tax revenues without raising taxes. However, some of the committee members said that Weidner pushed the meetings in the direction that he wanted, and that the final document was his doing and not really summations of their meetings or how the rest of the committee felt. They also said that the item in the report that calls for the elimination of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority was pure Weidner – as they have had a long running feud between the authority and the Sands. It is no secret that Sands Chairman Sheldon Adelson has long wanted to see them gone. They also complained that Weidner typed up the report then gave it to the governor, without asking for any input. They said that they did not see the report until it was already posted on the Governor’s website. They say that they did not endorse the document and don’t want to be associated with what they feel is an inferior document that does not truly encapsulate what they were saying.
