Bill Could be End for Riverboat Casinos

New slot machine legislation in Indiana could put the riverboats out of work, leaving many without jobs. There are currently nine slot machine casino boats that operate in Indiana, and the new legislation debated last week could make them even more obsolete than they are now.

Last week the Indiana General Assembly debated as to whether or not they would allow slot machines at the state’s two horse racing tracks. It also says that riverboats don’t have to be riverboats any longer, by not requiring a propulsion system any longer. This means that the boats that are currently sitting in the docks don’t even have to be boats – they could just be buildings, or as many see it – the opening for more full blown casinos.

Indiana has been more than comfortable with gambling for some years now – originally if you wanted to play the slot machines you had to get on a boat, go out into the Ohio River or Lake Michigan, play for an hour, then come back. Then the state decided that it was best that they stay in dock, and this way people could come and go as they please. Now it seems that they don’t even have to be a boat.

French Lick has the distinction of having the first land based casino in the state, but many feel that with the closing up of the riverboats they are simply looking to expand the slot machines and casinos across the state. The problem is all of the people who work those boats are now out of jobs. But with legislation five years ago allowing permanent docking, they have been just treading water anyway.
