Santa Ynez Valley Residents Concerned

The Santa Ynez Valley Residents are concerned with what they think is a proposed expansion of the Chumash Casino. They have called on the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors to put a halt to any slot machine or gambling expansion in the state. They want full reports of any sort of impact that it will have on the community before any further expansion is allowed.

They are having a meeting Tuesday, and they want to address the tribe’s desire to add 5,000 slot machines to their existing ones. They say that this would triple the number of slot machines that they have now, and they want that stopped. The group Preservation of Los Olivos says that they want state and county to have some sort of checks and balances in place so that the expansion is not just allowed to happen. They say that there aren’t any policies or procedures right now, and they want to be heard.

The only problem is that the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians isn’t planning on expanding in the near future. They say that they are not negotiating with the state for any kind of expansion of their casino operations. The tribe asked for more slot machines, and they asked for a ten year extension to their compact, but they are not looking to currently expand. They say they were simply part of another group who was looking for that, but that they are not planning on pursuing it at this time.

However, the citizens aren’t buying it, they say that if that initial request is approved, then they will be looking at a massive expansion, and they can’t allow that.
