Slot Machines are the New Racetracks

In the three months that slot machines have been operating at racetracks in Pennsylvania, they have already exceeded what the state thought they would do. In West Virginia, if you ask the people coming out of the racetracks what they thought of the horses, they say they didn’t see a single one while they were there – they were too busy playing the slot machines.

Across the country, racetracks are adding slot machines to their facilities in hope that they will save a dying sport – and all they are managing to do is bring in slot machine players. The original idea was for the racetracks to bring in slot machines, which would then in turn bring in more revenue as people came to see the horses and played slot machines as well. They needed money for bigger purses, so that they could draw in the better breeders and horses.

However, instead of sparking this amazing interest in horse racing, all they have done is make themselves into mini casinos, where people come and play the slot machines and don’t even look at the races. Now the racetracks are getting 90% or more of their revenue from the slot machines, and not the horses. Those people who wouldn’t pay to bet on the horses still don’t bet on the horses – they play the slot machines.

Animal activist groups say that this is just proof that horse and dog tracks should be gotten rid of, that they are inhumane and no one goes to them anyway. They say that they might as well just make the “racinos” into casinos, and give up the façade that they have been running under.

The horse tracks say that they need to save the industry and that by adding the slot machines eventually they will get more people out watching the races. They managed to save the horses for now though, didn’t they?
