Super Bowl Figures DownSuper Bowl Sunday, known for the fact that it is the biggest gambling day of the year, found its legal numbers down a bit from last year. Last year Super Bowl Sunday gamblers wagered $94.5 million – this year they wagered $93.1 million. These figures seem to suggest a rise in illegal betting and a drop in legal wagering. Overall wagering, including illegal bets, has been estimated at $8 billion this year, whereas last year it was only somewhere between $6 and $7 billion. Experts say that many people are turning to the illegal side of gambling because of the fact that the government has been trying to crack down on slot machines and gambling online. The Department of Justice has been trying to keep Americans from playing slot machines or other methods of gambling online, and in doing so has managed to do what many feared would happen – they have driven gambling underground. Experts say that many probably either could not wager online because of the new restrictions, or chose not to for fear of repercussions. Legal betting avenues are obviously not happy with this year’s trend, as it is taking money out of their pockets – but the government has no plans to discontinue the route they are taking.
