Tribe Recognition Adds to Slot Machine Pressure

The Mashpee Wampanoag has just become the second Massachusetts tribe to receive federal recognition after the Wampanoag of Gay Head-Aquinnah on Martha's Vineyard. With them now being legalized, the pressure is on lawmakers to legalize slot machines not just for the tribes but for the entire state.

The tribes are allowed to bring in Class II slot machines which are basically bingo machines, but cannot bring in Class III slot machines unless the state legalizes them. Many in the state have been trying to get that to happen for a long time now, so they are excited that there will now be more pressure on the state to approve the slot machines to make the tribes happy.

The tribes are just two of more than 560 nationally recognized tribes, who are allowed the Class II slot machines even if the rest of the state is not. The law is an attempt by the federal government to try and make up for the historical injustices that the Native Americans have suffered.

Beacon Hill has already been a “beacon” for the slot machine debate, and many feel that at the very least the tribe should be given the right to get the slot machines. However, lawmakers point out that once the tribes are given permission, you have just opened the door to widespread gambling across the state. Some representatives say that once you allow the tribes their gambling it will spread like wildfire across Massachusetts.

Opponents say that if you look at the lottery, it started as just a daily ticket, but now includes Keno and dozens of scratch tickets. They say it will be the same with the slot machines.
