Tribes Think Deadwood Gets Unfair AdvantageThe Sioux Tribes of South Dakota want to know why Deadwood has such an unfair advantage when it comes to the number of slot machines allowed. They say that the state limits the number of slot machines that each tribe is allowed to 250 so that they cannot compete with the slot machines in Deadwood. The South Dakota Gaming Commission says that they are trying to be fair to the tribes, but that the state voted in a “limited gaming” philosophy when they decided to allow gambling in Deadwood. The Legislature stated that there could be no more than 30 slot machines per building in Deadwood, and the most the bet limit could be was $5. Then an initiated measure in 2000 changed that amount to $100. However, with more and more gambling operations coming in, there are now almost 3,0000 slot machines in Deadwood, and the tribes are still limited to 250. The tribes want to know why they are claiming that they want to keep gambling limited, but then they keep allowing other places to open and bring in more slot machines. They say it is a double standard. The state says that they are open to negotiations, but that they are trying to keep to the limited gaming idea that the voters asked for. However, they claim that they won’t say that any more than 250 slot machines won’t be allowed as nothing is written in stone.
