Charitable Slot Machines Are NeededLawmakers are attempting to get the unregulated slot machines and electronic gambling machines banned from the state of Maryland, as they are taking away from the proceeds from the state lottery and are bound to hurt their chances of getting legal slot machines in the state. They say that the machines have to go as they are not regulated and therefore are a “disease” on the state. However, charitable organizations take exception to their new law. They say that they get tens of millions of dollars from these slot machines and if they are made illegal they will not be able to survive. They need the cash flow from these slot machines in order to continue. Ann Seely of the Center for Children says that they have already gotten about $25,000 since January for their charity which helps about 3,500 neglected children a year. She says that she understands the need for regulation but if they get rid of these types of slot machines they will not be able to continue their work in the same way. She also
says that she doesn’t know that the slot machines are
necessarily illegal. She does know that there are a lot of the
machines and that they do a lot of good. The bill would remove
all slot machines that are not part of the Eastern Shore
charitable groups’ ones, or the paper pull tabs. All of the
others would have up to a year from July 1st to be
removed.
